Random comments
Jay-Z & Kanye:“I don’t even know what that means.” “No one knows what it means, but it’s provocative.”
Surfer Blood: I wouldn’t normally rank a 4-track EP among my top 10, but Surfer Blood is arguably (TVOTR/Black Keys) the best band out there. Seriously. Astro Coast was my top album of 2010, and it wasn’t especially close except for Kanye.
True Widow: minus points for the title
Wild Flag: Did Sleater Kinney ever break up? (see also: the Corin Tucker Band…or Elastica)
Jackson Brownian: Dawes
Nico-esque: Austra
Neko-esque: Lydia Loveless
Lynchian (in descending order): Dirty Beaches, Lana Del Rey, Frankie Rose & the Outs, Dum Dum Girls, Vivian Girls, Crazy Clown Time (mostly “The Night Bell with Lightning”)
Depeche Modian: Puerto Rico Flowers, She Wants Revenge (by way of Joy Division & Interpol)
Duran Duranian: White Lies
Silver Beetles-esque: Bambi Kino

Cesária Évora
Amy Winehouse
Benny Spellman

I crawled onto a bar stool and drank a vodka. Vodka goes well with a wintery perspective. Nothing else provokes such presentiments of falling snow except, for some, the communist seizure of the state.

–Michèle Bernstein, Tous Les Chevaux Du Roi (All the King’s Horses)

I am Srikanth Srikantha
& I work for InfoTech
I drive a black Elantra
& my dreams are just a wreck

I was born outside Ahmedabad
now Red Deer is my home
two hours north of Edmonton
& two weeks west of Goa

& when I’m bored I’m really bored
I miss my Tata tea
I wish I were in Gujarat
the West is not for me

I miss you too Manjeera
without you here I’m blue
where it’s permanently winter
out on Jasper Avenue

& it’s TV night in Canada
Leafs-Flames on every screen
it’s Diwali back in Gujarat
but here it’s Halloween

& when I’m bored I’m really bored
I miss my Tata tea
I wish I were in Gujarat
the West is not for me

when rednecks hear I’m Indian
they often think of Tonto
it’s lonely since Tirumalesh
was transferred to Toronto

so now I drink my wobbly pop
& watch my CFL
have mercy on me, Shiva
please rescue me from Hell

& when I’m bored I’m really bored
I miss my Tata tea
I wish I were in Gujarat
the West is not for me
I wish I were in Gujarat
the West is not for me

two muskets at dusk
& the trace of musky lust

you were of the mood to explore
where you never were before
& I was your whore

no words of regret
no transacted silhouettes

we sang “Mission Bell”
me & Demoiselle

& the room was warm
& we had nothing on

ecstasy, went the dark Lord
you were somewhere west of bored

you went home, went to bed
dreams of Acapulco Red

& a neverending war
of where you never were before
& you never wanted more:

two outlaws at dawn
& the trace of nothing on

I dreamed you attacked us
& told us we were cunts

“don’t hate my blackness,
it was what you wanted once”
